Mackinac Island in a Day: Worth the Drive from Traverse City

Two hours of driving, twenty minutes on a ferry, and suddenly you're somewhere that doesn't allow cars. Mackinac Island is one of Michigan's most iconic family escapes — and from Traverse City, it's shockingly doable as a single-day adventure.

Here's the honest playbook: how to do Mackinac Island with kids, in one day, without losing your mind (or your wallet).

The Essentials

  • What: A historic, car-free island in the Straits of Mackinac. Think horse-drawn carriages, hand-pulled fudge, a Victorian-era fort, 70+ miles of bike trails, and an 1887 Grand Hotel that's a movie set in real life.
  • When: Ferries run mid-April through late October. Best family window: late May through early September.
  • Where you leave from: Mackinaw City, MI (Shepler's or Star Line ferry dock)
  • Distance from Traverse City: ~100 miles to Mackinaw City, roughly 2 hours via US-31 N and I-75 N
  • Ferry cost: ~$36 adult round-trip, $19 kids 5–12, free under 5 (2026 pricing — check current rates).
  • Best for ages: 3+ is the sweet spot. Younger kids can absolutely go, but will need a stroller or wagon. Older kids love renting bikes.

Why It's Worth the Drive

There is literally nowhere else in Michigan like it. No cars means no traffic, no car seats, no "buckle up" negotiations. Just horses clip-clopping past, kids running free down Main Street, and the kind of picture-perfect nostalgia that makes you text your mom "we should all come here next summer."

It's also ridiculously photogenic. Your camera roll will thank you.

The Smoothest One-Day Itinerary

  • 7:30 AM: Leave TC with coffee and road snacks.
  • 9:30 AM: Arrive Mackinaw City, park at Shepler's or Star Line (both offer free parking or paid lots nearby).
  • 10:00 AM: Catch the 10 AM ferry (they run every 30 minutes).
  • 10:20 AM: Land on the island. Walk Main Street, watch the fudge-makers at Joann's or Murdick's.
  • 11:00 AM: Carriage tour (~$41 adults, $17 kids) OR bike rental if you've got older kids. The 8-mile loop around the island is flat, gorgeous, and hard to mess up.
  • 12:30 PM: Lunch at The Pink Pony or Mary's Bistro (both kid-friendly, both have patios).
  • 1:30 PM: Fort Mackinac — kids love the cannon firings (every hour). Admission ~$15 adults, $10 kids.
  • 3:30 PM: Ice cream at Ryba's or one more fudge stop (there's a reason they call it Fudge Island).
  • 4:30 PM: Catch the 4:30 or 5 PM ferry back to Mackinaw City.
  • 5:15 PM: Quick dinner in Mackinaw City, then drive home.
  • 7:30 PM: Back in TC, kids asleep in the car. Win.

What to Expect With Kids

  • Stroller-friendly? YES. Main Street is flat and paved. Be ready to dodge some horse-carriage traffic.
  • Bathrooms: Public restrooms near the ferry docks, in Marquette Park, and in every restaurant.
  • Food: Endless. Kid menus everywhere. Fudge shops every 20 feet.
  • Bike rentals for families: Mackinac Island Bike Shop rents tag-alongs, kid bikes, and trailers. Reserve in advance for summer weekends.
  • Wet-weather backup: Most of the day is outdoors. If it's pouring, do Fort Mackinac (mostly indoor exhibits) and a long lunch instead of biking.

Mom's Pro Tips

  • Book your ferry online the night before. Walking up works, but pre-booked = faster boarding + guaranteed seat on your preferred departure.
  • Bring cash. Many little shops are card-friendly, but fudge tastings sometimes aren't.
  • Sunscreen + hats. Unobstructed sun all day on the water and the main drag.
  • Skip the carriage tour if your kid is under 3. It's ~1 hour 45 mins — tough for little attention spans. Rent a tandem or a family-sized surrey instead.
  • Pack a light layer for the ferry. Lake Huron wind is no joke, even in July.

Make It a Weekend?

  • Mission Point Resort — pools, lawn games, family-sized rooms. More relaxed than The Grand Hotel and half the price.
  • Bicycle Street Inn — right on Main Street, best location for families with tired little legs.
  • Stay the night in Mackinaw City: Cheaper, easier for early-morning ferries. Multiple hotels with indoor pools.

The Bottom Line

Do it. Do it this summer. Mackinac is one of those "I can't believe this is 2 hours from home" places. Knock it out as a day trip if you're budget-conscious, or make it a weekend if you want the full Grand Hotel photo moment. Either way, it belongs on your 2026 family bucket list.
