The Kite Festival at Grand Haven: Worth the 3-Hour Drive from Traverse City
A free weekend kite festival on Lake Michigan, 3 hours south of TC. Giant inflatable sea creatures, beach picnics, and zero admission. Here's the full scoop.

A Mom Exchange

Sometimes the best family memories happen a few hours outside of town. The Kite Festival at Grand Haven has quietly become one of the most photographed, most kid-friendly weekend events on Michigan's west coast — and for TC families willing to make the drive, it's shaping up to be the sleeper hit of May 2026.
We hadn't heard of it either until it popped up in our feed with a giant rainbow crab kite the size of a minivan. So we did the digging for you. Here's everything a Traverse City mom needs to know before packing the minivan.
The Essentials
- What: The Kite Festival at Grand Haven — a free, family-friendly beach festival featuring giant inflatable show kites, stunt kite demos, and beach vendors.
- When: Saturday, May 16, 2026 (10 AM – 5 PM) and Sunday, May 17, 2026 (11 AM – 5 PM)
- Where: Grand Haven State Park Beach — 1001 S Harbor Dr, Grand Haven, MI 49417
- Distance from Traverse City: ~175 miles, roughly 3 hours via US-31 South
- Cost: 🎉 Completely free. (State park entry may require a Recreation Passport — $13 for a non-resident day pass, or free if it's already on your Michigan plates.)
- Best for ages: Honestly, all of them. Toddlers love chasing the giant inflatables on the sand. Elementary kids want to fly their own. Teens will begrudgingly admit it's cool once they see the octopus kite.
Why It's Worth the Drive
Free weekend events that entertain the whole family for 4+ hours are rare. Free weekend events that are also genuinely beautiful — the kind you'll actually want to photograph — are even rarer. The festival features massive show kites (think: 50-foot-long rainbow octopuses, giant trilobites, technicolor manta rays) flying over Lake Michigan's turquoise water. It's a Pinterest board come to life, with a beach underneath.
Plus, Grand Haven itself is a charming beach town with a boardwalk, ice cream shops, and a historic red pier lighthouse — so even when the kids have maxed out on kites, you can easily turn it into a full day of beach + boardwalk + dinner.
Best Time to Go (and How to Avoid the Crowds)
Saturday is busier. Sunday is calmer. If you've got littles who wilt in crowds, Sunday's 11 AM opening is the sweet spot — you'll miss the Saturday swell and still catch every big kite in the sky. If you're going Saturday, aim to arrive before 11 AM to snag beach space and parking closer to the entrance.
Weather tip: Mid-May on Lake Michigan can be breezy and chilly. Wind is great for kites, but plan for 15–20 degrees cooler than inland. Layers are non-negotiable.
What to Expect With Kids
- Stroller-friendly? Mostly. The boardwalk is smooth, but the beach itself is sand — bring a beach wagon if you have one, or be ready to carry.
- Bathrooms: Yes — Grand Haven State Park has public restrooms and changing areas.
- Food on site: Limited beach vendors, but plenty of walkable restaurants a few blocks into town. See our picks below.
- Nap situation: Shaded spots are limited on the open beach. Bring a pop-up tent or an umbrella if you've got a baby who still naps on the go.
- Can my kid fly a kite too? Yes! Many families bring their own. Festival organizers usually keep a designated area for personal kites separate from the show kite zone.
Mom's Pro Tips
- Pack the wind gear: Light jackets, hats, sunglasses (sand + wind is no joke for little eyes).
- Bring snacks + a blanket: You'll save $40 and your sanity. A big beach blanket doubles as a wind break and a picnic base.
- Download the beach parking info ahead of time. Lots fill up fast on festival Saturdays — have a Plan B lot bookmarked.
- Wet wipes. So many wet wipes. Sand + snacks + toddler hands = you know the drill.
- Bail-out plan if the kids melt down: Pronto Pups (a Grand Haven institution) is a 5-minute walk away. A corn dog has saved many a family outing.
Make a Full Day of It — Where to Eat & Stop
- ☕ Coffee on the drive down: BIGGBY in Ludlow (at the Manistee exit, ~1 hour into the drive) — reliable, clean bathrooms, kid-friendly.
- 🍦 Ice cream in Grand Haven: Temple Ice Cream — downtown, walkable from the beach.
- 🌭 Famous beach snack: Pronto Pups — the corn dog stand that's been a Grand Haven summer staple for decades.
- 🍔 Lunch or dinner: Kirby Grill in downtown Grand Haven — big menu, kids welcome, patio seating.
- 🛑 Pit stop on the drive home: The Cherry Bowl Drive-In near Honor (if it's open) — movie night to cap off the trip.
Want to Make It a Weekend?
A 3-hour drive each way is doable in a day, but it's more fun as an overnight. A few family-friendly picks:
- Harbor House Inn — historic B&B, walkable to the beach and boardwalk.
- Holiday Inn Spring Lake — indoor pool (aka: the kid-bribe you need after a long day on the beach).
- Grand Haven State Park Campground — right on the beach. Book EARLY — sites for May festival weekend fill up months in advance.
The Bottom Line
Do it. Free + family-friendly + stunning photos + 171 RSVPs and 3,400+ interested on Facebook is not a coincidence. If your kids need a change of scenery before summer fully hits, this is a high-reward, low-cost weekend adventure that won't wreck your budget.
