The Village Isn’t Gone. It Just Looks Different Now.

Everyone says it takes a village. Weird how the village doesn’t just show up at your front door. We’re working on that.

A Mom Exchange

A Mom Exchange

The Village Isn’t Gone. It Just Looks Different Now.

Somewhere along the way, moms were told we needed a village.

And honestly? That sounds lovely.

A group of people who know your kids. Someone you can text when you're running ten minutes late. A friend who knows a sitter. Someone who says, “I'll take yours if you take mine next week.” People who notice when you've been a little quiet. Someone who will sit next to you at the thing so you don't have to walk in alone.

Yes. We'll take one village, please.

There’s just one small problem.

Where exactly are we supposed to find it?

The village changed.

For a lot of us, family doesn't live down the street.

Our best friends have jobs, kids, practices, appointments and calendars that require their own color-coded calendars.

We meet a mom at the park and think, I could actually be friends with her, and then one of our kids needs a snack, someone has to pee, and suddenly we're driving home realizing we never even got her name.

We join Facebook groups with thousands of people because maybe that's where the village is.

And sometimes they're incredibly helpful.

But sometimes you don't need 14,000 people.

You need three.

Three moms you can text.

One mom who knows exactly what you mean when you say, “Today was A DAY.”

Someone who also needs a sitter Friday night.

Someone whose kid is close enough in age to yours that getting together doesn't require negotiating an international peace treaty.

Someone who wants to go to the same event you saved three weeks ago and completely forgot about.

Someone nearby.

Someone real.

That's where The Exchange started.

We didn't sit down and think:

You know what moms really need? Another app.

Absolutely not.

The Exchange started with the little problems that happen over and over and over again in motherhood.

I need a sitter, but babysitting for one family is ridiculously expensive.

What if another mom needs one that night too?

Split the sitter. Split the cost.

That's Sitter Share.

I need to ask other moms something, but I don't necessarily want to post it to everyone I've ever met.

That's A Mom Ask.

I want mom friends. But I would rather eat a jean jacket than walk up to a random woman at the playground and ask if she wants to be my friend.

That's Connections.

I found something fun to do this weekend.

Save it. Make a plan. Share it with your family.

I found moms I actually click with.

Start a Group Text.

I'm having a really hard week.

Share the low.

My friend is having a really hard week.

Send the hug.

Little things.

But when you put them together?

They start looking an awful lot like a village.

And yes, we make you verify who you are.

Because this isn't a space built around collecting as many members as possible.

It's built around moms actually connecting with other moms.

There are features inside The Exchange designed to help you meet people, coordinate childcare and build relationships offline. That deserves more than an email address and a username.

So yes, there's a background check.

We'll talk much more about that in another post, because there's a reason we built it the way we did.

But the short version is simple:

If we're going to help moms find their people, we want to know there are actual people on the other side.

Maybe the village was never really a place.

Maybe that's the part we've been getting wrong.

Maybe it isn't something you magically find once you become a mom.

Maybe you build it.

One “I'll come with you.”

One “I know someone.”

One shared sitter.

One “Does anyone else want to go?”

One new number in your phone.

One mom who goes from someone you met through an app to someone your kid asks about on the way home.

That's what we're trying to build with The Exchange.

Not thousands of strangers in the same place.

More ways to find the few people who make your world feel a little less big.

The village isn't gone.

It just looks different now.
