Local Family Directory
Not all Traverse City parks are right for every age. The toddler who's just figured out climbing wants something low and forgiving. The 5-year-old wants the big slides. The preschooler wants both. And you, the caregiver, just want shade, a bench, and a restroom you don't have to drive to.
This guide is the age-honest take that most park lists skip. We've broken TC's parks down by what age each truly works for — based on what local moms actually report after a year of trial and error. Where shade is real. Where the stroller terrain is brutal. Where the toddler side is fenced.

0–18 months & up to toddler
Well-shaded with bucket swings perfect for tiny ones. The fenced perimeter is the actual sanity-saver if you've got an older sibling too. Coffee from Espresso Bay nearby.
0–18 months — soft surfaces
The toddler-only side is on poured rubber. Multiple bucket swings, low slides, and minimal stairs. Restrooms during park hours. The 'I just want to sit on a bench' park.
Stroller breaks + bench-watching
Smaller, very central — fountain, open grass, low-key playground. Perfect for a downtown break with a baby in the carrier. Walk-to coffee/ice cream after.
Toddler climbers
Smaller scale structures = confidence-building for new climbers. Less crowded than Civic Center on weekends. A favorite of east-side TC moms.
Toddler + beach combo
Calm inland lake + small playground = a low-stress toddler day. Bring sand toys. The 15-minute drive is worth it on hot days when town beaches get crowded.
Preschool — splash pad + big play
The big-kid side has multiple slides, a climbing wall, and the splash pad next door. The paved stroller loop means you can do a lap with a younger sibling while the preschooler runs.
Preschool & up — big play + beach
Multiple slides, swings, AND a walkable beach. Free parking. The 'rainy-day-then-sunshine' park where you can pivot from playground to wading without driving anywhere.
Confident climbers + view-seekers
The views. Bring snacks and stay for the sunset. Climbing structures suited for confident walkers and up. Steep paths in places — not the easiest stroller terrain.
Beach + playground combo
The classic TC summer park. Sandy beach, big-kid play structure, free parking, restrooms. Easy to spend a full afternoon here without a single complaint.
All ages — walkable downtown
Right on Grand Traverse Bay — beach, play structure, marina views. Walk to ice cream after. Metered parking on busy summer days, free off-season.
Calm water + small kids
Calmer East Bay water + a playground a few yards from the sand. Picnic shelters, restrooms. The lower-key alternative to Bryant on a Saturday.
Stroller laps + multi-age outings
Paved 4-mile loop around Boardman Lake — flat, scenic, and the most stroller-friendly long walk in TC. Multiple entry points; do as much or as little as the day allows.
