18 Fun Things to Do With Kids in Traverse City (From Real Local Moms)

You know that look. The "I'm bored, mom" face. The one that hits at 9:47am on a Saturday when it's somehow already raining. This is your cheat sheet — 18 places in and around Traverse City where Northern Michigan moms actually take their kids. Indoor, outdoor, rainy-day rescues, and "let's make this Saturday a memory" spots, all in one post.

I asked moms in our village for the spots they go back to again and again. These are the names that came up most. No fluff, no sponsored picks — just where TC kids beg to go.

🏀 Indoor Active Play (When the Weather Won't Cooperate)

1. Incredible Mo's

The big one. Bowling, laser tag, arcade, bumper cars, mini golf, and a full kitchen — all under one roof in Traverse City. Best for ages 4 and up; smaller kids may find the noise level a lot but there's a toddler play area too. Pro tip from moms: weekday afternoons are way calmer than weekends. Birthday packages are popular for a reason.

2. Altitude Trampoline Park

Trampolines, dodgeball, foam pits, and a ninja obstacle course. Toddler Time hours (check their site — usually weekday mornings) are a sanity-saver for moms with little ones who want to bounce without getting flattened by 10-year-olds. Grip socks required. This one wears them out — bring snacks for the car ride home.

3. The Den

A newer indoor playground in Traverse City built specifically for younger kids — think soft play, climbing structures, slides, and a calmer vibe than the bigger venues. A favorite for moms with toddlers and preschoolers, and a popular birthday-party spot. Worth a follow on social for their hours and special events.

4. Great Lakes Children's Museum (and the Curiosity Place inside)

An interactive children's museum in Greilickville (just outside TC, off M-22). Hands-on exhibits, water play, a pretend grocery store, art studio, and a bubble room. The Curiosity Place — their hands-on STEM and tinkering space — is part of the museum and great for the kid who'd rather build than bounce. Perfect for ages 1-7. Membership pays for itself if you go more than 3-4 times a year.

🎨 Arts & Hands-On Creativity

5. Surfaces Art

A local mom favorite for kids who light up around paint, clay, and chaos in the best way. Surfaces runs walk-in art studio time, kids workshops, and paint-your-own-pottery sessions in Traverse City. Perfect for a rainy afternoon, a low-key birthday party, or just letting your kid create something they get to take home. Great for ages 3 and up.

6. Dennos Museum Center

On the NMC campus. Their Second Sunday Art Project is a hands-on, parent-friendly free family event every second Sunday of the month — printmaking, painting, weaving. Plus a permanent Inuit art collection that genuinely fascinates kids.

7. Old Town Playhouse

Local community theatre with regular family-friendly productions and youth performances. The Young Company spring class showcase is free or low-cost and a sweet way to introduce kids to live theatre.

8. Crooked Tree Arts Center

Drop-in art classes, school-break camps, and family events at this downtown TC arts center. The seasonal kids art workshops are well-loved.

🏨 Resort & Water Fun

9. Grand Traverse Resort & Spa

Yes, locals can use the indoor and outdoor pools — and yes, kids absolutely love it. The indoor pool with the slide is a classic winter day-pass move. Day passes are available for non-guests during off-peak hours; check their concierge line for current rates. The Spa Café is surprisingly kid-friendly for a quick lunch.

10. Clinch Park Beach & Discovery Pier

Right downtown, free, and one of the most kid-friendly beaches in TC. Calm water, splash pad, playground, and kayak/paddleboard rentals next door at Paddle TC. Discovery Pier is the long pedestrian pier that juts out into the bay — great for an evening walk or fishing with kids.

11. Bryant Park & East Bay Beaches

Two of the calmer, less crowded beaches on East Bay. Bryant has a small playground; both are great for younger kids who get overwhelmed at downtown beaches. Pack a cooler and make a morning of it.

🏞️ Outdoor Adventures & Day Trips

12. Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore

About 25 minutes west of TC. The Dune Climb is iconic — let kids run down it (they will sleep that night). The shorter Cottonwood Trail is doable with little legs. Pack water, sunscreen, and a change of clothes for everyone. The Lake Michigan beaches at Empire and Glen Haven are stunning.

13. Old Mission Peninsula Drive

A 30-minute scenic drive ending at the Mission Point Lighthouse with a beach, a small museum, and short trails. Stop at Brys Estate or Bonobo for picnic-friendly views. A perfect "let's get out of the house" Sunday.

14. Pirate's Cove Adventure Park

Mini golf, go-karts, bumper boats, and an arcade in Traverse City. Seasonal (open spring through fall) and a fun seasonal stop if you've got older kids who can handle the go-karts and bumper boats. Best for ages 5+.

15. Jacob's Farm

Seasonal family events that keep moms coming back all year — sunflower fields in summer, the famous pumpkin patch and corn maze in fall, U-pick flowers, farm animals, hayrides, and outdoor concerts. The fall season is especially magical with kids; bring boots and let them get dirty. Wide-open space, easy parking, and just unfussy outdoor fun.

🌲 Quiet Days & Hidden Gems

16. Traverse Area District Library (TADL)

The TC library system runs dozens of free weekly kids programs across all branches — storytime, baby playgroup, build-and-create, after-school clubs, teen events. This is the most underrated free entertainment in town. (And yes, we list every TADL program in our events calendar.)

17. Boardman River Nature Center (GTCD)

Run by the Grand Traverse Conservation District. Free trails, riverside picnic areas, frog-catching in summer, and free family programming like "Family River Days" and "Fireside Chats." A real local mom favorite for a slower-paced afternoon.

18. The Botanic Garden at Historic Barns Park

Free to walk, year-round. Beautiful gardens, the historic barns, and seasonal family events like Fairy Day and Story Walks for the littles. Bring a picnic.
